This issue of "Secrets To Their Success" features Joel Morrical of Clarion, Iowa. Joel currently runs a flock of 90 Hampshire-Suffolk Crossbred ewes. Enjoy reading our candid interview with Mr. Joel Morrical and check back soon for our next "Secrets To Their Success"!

How did you get involved in the club lamb industry? Did you Show?
My parents were instrumental in my interest in livestock growing up.  The year before I could start showing in 4-H my dad bought my sister and I twenty Polypay ewes.  Although they obviously weren’t the worlds greatest show sheep, I was immediately hooked.  My sister and I grew up showing sheep and a few hogs and steers.  I have always wanted to raise livestock ever since I can remember.  My wife and I started our current flock in 2003 with the purchase of 20 ewes from Barb Garvie.

Did you attend college?  If so, were you on a judging team?
I attended Iowa State University where I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science.  I was very fortunate to be on a successful judging team that won Denver, Houston and Sioux Falls and was second at the National Barrow Show.

What buck do you believe took you to the next level?
Although lambs haven’t started hitting the ground yet, we are very excited about the purchase of Money Maker from Brian Reilly and Clay Elliot.  When thinking about the future we felt he was the perfect compliment to what our ewe base typically brings to the table and look forward to the impact he can make on our flock.

What is your favorite part about raising sheep?
Although hectic, I would say lambing season ranks highest on my list.   I also thoroughly enjoy all the people you meet and friendships you make along the way.

What is the biggest challenge to raising show lambs?
I think the challenges are abundant, and are around every corner when raising any kind of livestock, but for us right now it’s time.  Full-time jobs, three small children, and lots of projects around the acreage can make things a little busy.

Where do you see yourself/ your flock in 10 years?
Personally, I don’t know if you can forecast where life will take you, but god-willing raising a happy, healthy family that learn the values and rewards that raising livestock can yield. Professionally, continued-improvement are the two words that come to my mind.  I once heard a basketball coach say “You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse, you never stay the same.”  Having a successful, sustainable operation in which the sheep continually improve and are well received and work for breeders and feeders alike is our ultimate goal.

Outside of raising sheep what do you do?
I currently manage a research facility for a large swine integrator, chase kids around, and spend as much time with friends and family as possible.

Who was the most influential person to your involvement in the sheep industry?  My dad.

Favorite sports team?  Go Clones!

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go?  New Zealand/ Australia
